HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison forced overtime with five points in the final 19 seconds of regulation on Thursday night, then dominated the extra period on its way to an 81-71 win over Coppin State in non-conference men's basketball action at the JMU Convocation Center.
After trailing by as many as 10 in the second half and facing a 62-58 deficit with less than 20 seconds to play, sophomore
Matt Lewis converted a tough three-point play in the lane to halve the deficit. After a quick foul and one of two free throws, Lewis again split two defenders and got a tough floater to roll home with 3.5 seconds left to force overtime for the third time in five games.
In the extra minutes, the Dukes (6-3) found their shooting stroke, hitting all three of their three-pointers, including a pair from sophomore
Darius Banks, and nine of their 12 free throws to outrun Coppin State (0-8) by an 18-8 margin in just five minutes.
Five Dukes scored in double figures on the evening, with senior
Stuckey Mosley and Banks leading the way with 19 and 18, respectively. Lewis racked up 16, all in the second half, while senior
Develle Phillips went for 11 points and six rebounds and freshman
Deshon Parker posted a career-high 10 points to go with six steals and a pair of assists in 34 turnover-free minutes.
