HARRISONBURG, Va. -
Justin Jannuzzi, senior associate athletics director for development at James Madison, announced multiple staff adjustments in the JMU Duke Club on Thursday, including the elevations of
Emily Hurd to director of special events and donor engagement and
Brad Burgess and
Scooter Renkin into new roles as athletic development officers.
As director of special events and donor engagement, Hurd will oversee all Duke Club events, with an emphasis on cultivating, stewarding and increasing the donor base, while Burgess and Renkin's responsibilities will include managing the Young Alumni Program as well as Student Duke Club, and focusing on external fundraising efforts to grow the overall support through annual giving and major gift opportunities like capital projects and planned giving.
"Emily, Brad and Scooter have been the ultimate team players this year and are very deserving of their new titles," Jannuzzi said. "The Duke Club's mission is to continue to increase the support that we provide our student-athletes so that they receive a world-class experience at JMU and these three are a crucial part of that effort."
Hurd most recently served as the assistant director of donor engagement and events beginning in June of 2017. Prior to coming to JMU, Hurd spent a year and a half at Kent State, serving as the special projects assistant to the athletics director. She facilitated both internal and external operations of the department, ensuring efficiency of all units.
Before her stint at Kent State, Hurd worked in student-athlete academic services departments at both Florida State and West Virginia.
Hurd is a multiple-degree graduate of Penn State, where she was a Division I student-athlete on the women's soccer team. She received her undergraduate degree in communications in 2013 and her master's in higher education administration in 2014. Hurd was a four-year starter and a two-year team captain for the Nittany Lions. She led her team to four consecutive Big Ten championships and a runner-up finish in the 2012 NCAA Championship.
Burgess returned to James Madison in June of 2017 as assistant director of development following one year in a similar fundraising role at Western Carolina.
From 2014-16, Burgess served as a graduate assistant in student-athlete leadership development at JMU. His responsibilities included assisting in overseeing SAAC operations, researching, developing and implementing holistic student-athlete development initiatives and day-to-day operations in the student-athlete leadership office.
Burgess graduated with cum laude honors in 2014 from the Hart School at JMU with a Bachelor of Science in sport and recreation management and a minor in business. In 2016, he completed a master's degree in sport and recreation leadership from JMU.
Renkin arrived at James Madison in June of 2017 as assistant director of development following a year at N.C. State's Wolfpack Club.
While with the Wolfpack Club, Renkin was given the opportunity to work in various phases of athletic development. He assisted with both the major gift and annual fund campaigns, as well as helping to plan and implement Wolfpack Club events.
Renkin received his master's degree in sport leadership from VCU in 2016. Prior to VCU, Renkin played professional basketball for three years in both Uruguay and Australia. He earned all-league honors in both professional divisions.
Hailing from Midlothian, Va., upon graduating from Blue Ridge School (Va.), Renkin played basketball at JMU during the 2008-09 season. After his freshman season, he transferred to Indiana University of Pennsylvania. At IUP, Renkin played for an NCAA Division II National Championship and led his team to two Sweet Sixteen seasons. He was an all-conference performer and was named PSAC Scholar Athlete of the Year. Renkin graduated from IUP with a Bachelor of Science.
Heading into 2018-19, the Duke Club has also added
Alli Pinello (JMU '18) and
Ashley Doyle as graduate assistants.
