HARRISONBURG, Va. - UNCW scored the final seven points of the game on Thursday night, handing James Madison a tough 86-83 double-overtime loss in Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball at the JMU Convocation Center.
The Dukes (7-9, 0-3 CAA) erased a five-point halftime deficit with a flurry of three-pointers, hitting five of six from behind the arc to open the second half, eventually leading by as many as eight before UNCW (5-10, 1-1 CAA) scored 10 straight points to take a 61-59 lead.
With 13 seconds left in regulation, the Seahawks took a 67-64 lead with a pair of free throws, but sophomore guard
Darius Banks drilled a three-pointer from the right wing with five seconds left to force overtime. Five minutes later, UNCW would respond with a game-tying tip-in just before the overtime buzzer to force a second extra period.
JMU would take a four-point lead with two free throws from sophomore guard
Matt Lewis with 3:03 to play, but UNCW would score seven unanswered points the rest of the way, using a three-pointer, a layup and a pair of game-sealing foul shots to close out the win.
Lewis would lead the Dukes on the evening, racking up 22 points to go with a career-high six assists, while senior guard
Stuckey Mosley tallied 21 and Banks added 20 with the help of a career-high four three-pointers, along with seven rebounds.
UNCW got 18 points and 19 rebounds from senior forward Devontae Cacok and won the rebounding battle, 53-32, while pulling down 20 offensive boards as a team.
QUOTING COACH ROWE
"I'm gutted for our guys tonight. They battled all the way through and UNCW just made one or two more plays than us at the right times. We know we have to be better on the glass and we know we have to be cleaner at the end of games. We have a tough one coming to town on Saturday, so we need to get rested and get ready for a battle."
