QUICK HITS
- James Madison men's basketball heads across the mountain for a stern test on Sunday afternoon as the Dukes travel to face No. 11 Virginia, the reigning national champion, in a 6 p.m. match up in Charlottesville.
- Earlier this week, the Dukes opened their 2019-20 campaign with a 79-74 victory over Charlotte in Harrisonburg, with junior guard Matt Lewis notching his first career double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds on the evening to lead the way.
- The Dukes took a step forward in 2018-19, going 14-19 on the year, including a 6-12 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play.
- Despite the graduation of departed guard Stuckey Mosley, the Dukes reuturn three other players who averaged double-digit scoring last season in Lewis (16.4ppg) and Darius Banks (12.3) and junior forward Dwight Wilson (10.2), who also pulled down 7.8 rebounds per contest in a breakout sophomore season.
- Prior to the season, both Lewis and Banks were named to Preseason All-CAA teams, with Lewis earning a spot on the All-CAA First Team and Banks being tabbed to the Second Team heading into 2019-20.
- The Dukes were tabbed to finish fourth in the preseason poll of the league's coaches and media members, earning three first-place votes along the way in one of the closest preseason polls in league history.
- Heading into the season, JMU welcomed a six-member freshman class, including forward Michael Christmas, Dalton Jefferson and Julien Wooden, as well as guards Zyon Dobbs, Jayvis Harvey and Quinn Richey.
- Virginia, which was picked to finish fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference after capturing the 2019 NCAA National Championship, opened the season last week with a 48-34 victory at Syracuse, holding the Orange to just 23.6% shooting from the field.
- Senior forward Mamadi Diakite returns for the Cavs, having been named to multiple National Player of the Year watch lists entering the 2019-20 campaign, while sophomore Kihei Clark was named to the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award watch list himself.
- In 10 meetings between the Commonweatlh foes, including six meetings in Charlottesville and three contests in Harrisonburg, the Dukes have never defeated Virginia.
- JMU faced the Cavaliers five times in four seasons from 1980-81 to 1983-84, a stretch that included two games in the span of four days during 1981-82: a 57-44 contest in Richmond on Dec. 30, 1981 and a 73-65 game in Charlottesville on Jan. 2, 1982.
- The two schools last faced each other in a home-and-home series during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons, which both saw the Cavaliers finish atop the ACC.
