QUICK HITS
- James Madison aims to close the first half of its Colonial Athletic Association slate with a victory on Saturday afternoon when it continues south to face Elon in a 4 p.m. matchup.
- On Thursday, junior guards Darius Banks and Matt Lewis racked up 24 and 22 points, respectively, but the Dukes could not recover from an early shooting onslaught and fell to William & Mary, 88-75, at Kaplan Arena. Sophomore guard Deshon Parker added 14 points and four steals in the loss.
- Heading into the ninth CAA matchup, junior Matt Lewis leads the charge with 17.7 points per game, while junior Darius Banks is adding 14.0 points per contest and junior Dwight Wilson is averaging a double-double at 10.6 points and 10.5 boards.
- Wilson's rebounding currently ranks third in the league as one of just three players averaging double digits, and his 53.2% clip from the field is also third-highest, while sophomore Deshon Parker is second in the CAA in assist-turnover ratio at 1.7.
- The Dukes were tabbed to finish fourth in the preseason poll of the league's coaches and media members, earning three first-place votes along the way in one of the closest preseason polls in league history.
- Heading into the season, JMU welcomed a six-member freshman class, including forward Michael Christmas, Dalton Jefferson and Julien Wooden, as well as guards Zyon Dobbs, Jayvis Harvey and Quinn Richey.
SCOUTING THE PHOENIX
- Elon has lost three consecutive games in the last two weeks to fall to 5-16 (1-7 CAA), joining the Dukes in a tie for eighth in the CAA standings heading into Saturday afternoon's matchup.
- Graduate student Marcus Sheffield II leads the way for the Elon offense, racking up 16.2 points per contest and shooting 38.5% from the three-point line, while freshman Hunter Woods adds 10.3 points and pulls down a team-best 6.5 rebounds per game.
SERIES HISTORY
- Saturday night marks the 12th meeting between Elon and James Madison, with all but one contest coming since the Phoenix joined the Colonial Athletic Association for the 2014-15 season.
- The Dukes continue to hold a 7-4 advantage in the all-time series, despite Elon sweeping the teams' regular-season meetings during the 2018-19, edging JMU in a 68-65 battle in Elon before cruising to a 73-58 victory in Harrisonburg on Feb. 28.
- In last year's matchup at the Schar Center, the Dukes could not climb all the way back from a 17-point deficit as they fell by three. Then-sophomore Dwight Wilson powered JMU with 22 points on 11-of-12 shooting while grabbing 10 rebounds, as the Dukes cut the deficit to as few as two in the final minutes before a turnover with six seconds left sealed the loss.
