HARRISONBURG, Va. - Senior guard
Matt Lewis racked up 29 points in just 25 minutes to lead a complete team effort on Sunday evening as James Madison cruised to a 98-55 win over Alice Lloyd College in non-conference men's basketball at the Atlantic Union Bank Center.
The Dukes (3-2) got at least a basket from all 12 dressed players on Sunday, getting contributions from all over the court as they shot 54.5% (36-of-66) from the field and out-rebounded the Eagles by a 47-33 margin.
Lewis set the tone with a blistering 10-of-14 (71.4%) pace from the field that included five of his nine attempts from three and saw him not miss a shot from inside the arch. The effort marked his 10th career game of 25 points or more and saw him make a three-pointer for the 42nd consecutive game, the fourth-longest active streak in the country.
Sophomore forwards
Michael Christmas and
Julien Wooden both joined Lewis in double figures, with Wooden tallying 11 points on the day and Christmas enjoying his best performance of the year with 12 points, four rebounds and a pair of steals.
JMU opened the game with the first 10 points of the contest and didn't look back, not allowing Alice Lloyd to cut things to single digits after the 10:29 and steadily expanding the lead the rest of the way, capping the contest with a 13-3 run and seven straight points to close things out.
Bryce Slone led the way for ALC, hitting a trio of three-pointers on his way to 17 points on the day, while Jared Strickland added 11.
QUOTING COACH BYINGTON
"This was a good night for us in multiple ways. The score is one thing, but we wanted to try and get some guys some game experience, since it's been kind of a frustrating start getting going and getting guys in shape. I'm still learning the team and I want to see what some guys can do in certain situations. I thought we played hard and unselfishly - it was good to see some guys in a rhythm, so it was still valuable for us."
