QUICK HITS
- The James Madison Dukes will be back in action for the third time in four days on Tuesday evening, when they head to the state capital to face former Colonial Athletic Association foe VCU at 4 p.m.
- The Dukes played both Saturday and Sunday over the weekend, dropping a 73-64 decision at East Carolina on Saturday before returning home to cruise to a 98-55 victory over NAIA Alice Lloyd College.
- The Dukes are now 3-2 in a chaotic 2020-21 season, having picked up victories over Limestone University and Radford across the opening week of play, while dropping a tough 83-73 decision to an experienced Norfolk State team.
- Seniors Matt Lewis and Zach Jacobs return to lead a new-look JMU squad that welcomes 10 newcomers and returns just five players from last season's 9-21 campaign that saw the Dukes go 2-16 in league play.
- Lewis is averaging 21.2 points per contest through the opening five games, while newcomer guard Vado Morse is adding 15.5 ppg and sophomore forward Julien Wooden chips in 10.0ppg.
- The Dukes' freshmen are off to strong starts, with forward Justin Amadi tallying 8.0ppg/4.0rpg through the opening month, while Terell Strickland is posting 4.4p/3.8r/3.8a/3.0s and Terrence Edwards is at 6.6p/5.4r/2.4a already.
- While the Dukes were picked to finish ninth in the Colonial Athletic Association in this season's preseason poll, Lewis was named the CAA Preseason Player of the Year, the first Duke to earn that nod in the preseason.
SCOUTING THE RAMS
- VCU will return from a full week off on Tuesday, returning to action after besting Western Carolina in a 93-68 bout on Dec. 15 before seeing a pair of games lost to COVID-related complications.
- Sophomore guard Nah'Shon Hyland continued to pace the Rams on the offensive end in their win over WCU, racking up a career-high 31 points to raise his scoring average to 18.6 points per contest on 44.2% shooting and a 40.6% clip from long range. Junior guard Vince Williams adds 10.0ppg on 47.7% shooting from the field.
SERIES HISTORY
- VCU currently stands as the Dukes' fifth-longest-running rivalry in program history, with Tuesday's match marking the 66th meeting between the two schools in men's basketball, but the first since VCU's departure from the CAA following the 2011-12 season.
- The Rams controlled the series for their final years in the league, winning seven of the last 10 meetings to push their advantage in the all-time series to 44-21, including a tall 26-8 margin in games played at VCU.
- The two schools have not met since the 2011-12 season, when the two teams met just once - a 65-45 VCU win in Richmond. The year prior, the two teams split a pair of tight games, with each team winning on the opposing home court: the Rams picked up a 70-66 at the JMU Convocation Center before JMU capped both teams' regular seasons with a 72-69 victory in Richmond later that month.
