HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison volleyball returned home and swept its weekend opener in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-8, 25-21) win over William & Mary on Saturday.
JMU improved to 11-4 overall and 5-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while W&M fell to 3-9 overall and 0-7 in the CAA.
Sophomore
Miëtte Veldman led the way with 14 kills on a season-high .480 hitting percentage. Veldman's career high in hitting percentage came last season against the Tribe, when she hit .593 on March 28, 2021. Freshman
Annie Smith and junior
Caroline Dozier each set career highs in blocks with nine and eight, respectively. Dozier also contributed 27 of JMU's 29 assists.

This is JMU's first three-set victory since sweeping North Carolina Central on Sept. 4. Â

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
The opening set started back-and-forth, with both teams making runs and the score tied at 12. A 7-2 JMU run gave the Dukes a 19-14 lead, and the Tribe never got closer than four. A Camryn Jones solo block finished the set, giving the Dukes a 25-17 victory.
Second Set
The Dukes took charge early, gaining a 14-1 advantage, as W&M had eight attacking errors in the first 15 points of the set. JMU gave up its second-fewest points in a 25-point set this season, eventually closing a 25-8 set win with a 5-0 run.
Third Set
William & Mary did not back down, erasing an early four-point deficit to tie the score at 12. Like the first set, the Dukes scored seven of nine to take a 19-14 lead, before W&M grabbed six of eight to cut the JMU lead to 21-20. However, the Dukes won four of five points to win the set 25-21, with Dozier and Smith combining for two blocks in that stretch.

The two teams will close the weekend series with a rematch at Sinclair Gymasium on Sunday, Oct. 17. First serve is set for 3 p.m. ET.
