QUICK HITS
- James Madison will close out a three-game homestand on Saturday evening, capping the week with a 7 p.m. matchup against Radford at the Atlantic Union Bank Center before hitting the road for five straight games.
- The Dukes are coming off a historic victory Tuesday evening, overcoming a second-half surge by Virginia to defeat the Cavaliers 52-49. JMU held Virginia to just 14 first half points and a 15.3% shooting percentage from the three-point line.
- Graduate transfer Takal Molson provided the heroics, hitting jumpers on back-to-back possessions in the final minute to give the Dukes the lead, then put the game out of reach.
- JMU's six Division I victories have been by a total of 18 points, winning by 5, 1, 3, 2, 4, and 3 points, respectively. The Dukes have trailed at some point in the second half off all six victories and have played in seven games decided by five points or less in total, after playing just five such games in 2020-21.
- The Dukes are led on offense by redshirt junior Vado Morse (11.0 ppg) and Molson (10.9 ppg). Six different Dukes average at least 8.3 points per game. JMU's victory over Virginia came without a player reaching double figures for the first time since Nov. 12, 2009.
- James Madison has taken care of the basketball, with fewer than 15 turnovers in its last six games, after starting the season with more than 15 in three of its first four contests.
- A pair of Dukes - redshirt freshman Justin Amadi (.603) and graduate transfer Alonzo Sule (.684) are shooting above a 60% clip this season. The duo have combined to shoot 74-for-115 from the field through the opening 10 games.
- JMU has 106 total steals in 2021-22, fourth-most in Division I, led by Morse with 17 and Amadi with 16.
SCOUTING THE HIGHLANDERS
- Under first-year head coach and Radford, Va. native Darris Nichols, the Highlanders are 4-5, though three losses have come to Power 5 opponents. Radford just had a three-game winning streak snapped against Nichols' alma mater West Virginia: 67-51 on Dec. 4.
- The Highlanders are led by junior Rashun Williams and graduate student Bryan Hart, who both average 8.3 points per game.
- RU has committed at least 15 turnovers in every game, and have 154 total on the season compared to 129 for their opponents.
SERIES HISTORY
- Located just a short drive apart on Interstate 81, the Dukes and Highlanders have matched up 18 times, with JMU holding a 14-4 advantage. The two sides have played each other every season but one since 2014-15, and the Dukes hold a 4-2 record in that span.
- Radford visited the Atlantic Union Bank Center last season on Nov. 29, 2020, in a 67-59 JMU triumph. The Highlanders are the first opponent to make a return trip to the new home of James Madison basketball this season after playing there last season.
