QUICK HITS
- The James Madison Dukes will welcome the defending Colonial Athletic Association champions to Harrisonburg this weekend for a crucial two-game series, as Hofstra will come to the Atlantic Union Bank Center on Jan. 13-14 for a pair of 2 p.m. tips.
- The matchups, one of only a few that have not been rescheduled for the Dukes this season, will pair the second- and third-place teams in the CAA standings, with just three weekends left before the CAA Tournament on March 6-9.
- The Dukes improved to 11-5 (6-1 CAA) on the 2020-21 season this week, battling back for a hard-fought victory at Elon earlier this week, overcoming a halftime deficit to pick up a 70-61 win on the road on Tuesday night.
- Senior guard Matt Lewis is playing the best basketball of his career, leading the Dukes and the CAA in scoring through the opening 16 contests, racking up 4.8rpg and 3.6apg along the way, while shooting nearly 40% from the three-point line.
- The senior guard is averaging 20.6 points per contest, 19th-most in Division I, climbing to third place on JMU's all-time scoring list, while newcomer guard Vado Morse is adding 13.5 ppg.
- Senior Zach Jacobs has been putting in yeoman's work for the Dukes across the last two weeks, averaging 9.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in just 17 minutes per game, while hitting eight of his 11 shots from the floor.
- The Dukes rank among the best in the nation at getting to the free throw line - KenPom currently ranks the Dukes seventh in the country in their ability to earn free throws.
SCOUTING THE PRIDE
- Hofstra, which has been able to play more league games than any other team in the CAA, moved to 12-7 (8-4 CAA) on the season after splitting a pair of hard-fought contests at home last weekend against Drexel, 71-73 and 79-74.
- Senior guard Jalen Ray leads the way for a talented Hofstra offense, racking up 17.9 points per contest - second-most in the league behind only Matt Lewis. Fellow senior Tareq Coburn adds 15.2 points, while junior center Isaac Kante has proven to be a force in the middle, averaging 13.6 points and 10.2 boards, the second-highest rebounding mark in the league.
SERIES HISTORY
- Hofstra has staked itself a 22-13 lead in the all-time series between the two teams in the last few years, winning three straight and seven of the last eight, including four straight in games played in Harrisonburg.
- In their last meeting, the Pride clinched last season's regular-season title when it erupted for 20 three-pointers on February 29, 2020, handing the Dukes a 97-81 loss in Hempstead in both teams' regular-season finale. Then-junior Matt Lewis still racked up 22 points, seven boards and five assists in the loss, while then-freshman Michael Christmas added 16 points and six rebounds.
