- The James Madison Dukes will complete the second leg of its season series against Elon on Tuesday evening, traveling south to face the Phoenix at the Schar Center at 6 p.m.
- This game is the second of two twice-rescheduled contests -the series was originally scheduled for Jan. 16-17, but moved up a week to replace a postponed trip to UNCW, before the Elon series itself was postponed due to a CoVID-19 case in the Elon program.
- The Dukes improved to 10-5 (5-1 CAA) on the 2020-21 season after besting the Phoenix back in Harrisonburg last Wednesday, cruising to a 78-57 win at home to stretch their winning streak to four games and make it seven wins in their last eight games.
- Senior guard Matt Lewis is playing the best basketball of his career, leading the Dukes and the CAA in scoring through the opening 15 contests, racking up 4.7rpg and 3.7apg along the way while shooting 40.2% from the three-point line.
- The senior guard is averaging 20.5 points per contest, 22nd-most in Division I, climbing to third place on JMU's all-time scoring list, while newcomer guard Vado Morse is adding 13.2 ppg.
- Freshman Terell Strickland is on a tear for the Dukes, having capped a stellar two-week stretch with this week's CAA Rookie of the Week nod. In hiis last three games, the energetic guard is averaging 12.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.3 steals.
- The Dukes rank among the best in the nation at getting to the free throw line - KenPom currently ranks the Dukes eighth in the country in their ability to earn free throws.
SCOUTING THE PHOENIX
- Elon is now 3-6 on the season, including an 0-5 mark in league play, and has lost six straight games on either side of a January pause due to CoVID-19. The Phoenix dropped two games at Delaware in their first action since Jan. 3 before falling in Harrisonburg.
- Sophomore Hunter McIntosh continues to lead the way for Elon on offense, racking up 18.1 points per contest after tallying 19 in the teams' matchup last week, while sophomore Hunter Woods adds 9.1 points and a team-high 6.9 rebounds per game. Woods tallied eight points and 10 boards last week against the Dukes.
SERIES HISTORY
- In their matchup last week, the Dukes snapped Elon's five-game winning streak over JMU with a 78-57 victory that gave the Dukes an 8-7 lead in the all-time series, though things are level at 3-3 in games played at Elon.
- Last week's matchup saw freshman Terell Strickland lead an incredibly balanced attack for the Dukes, as he racked up 15 points with the help of a 3-of-6 afternoon from the three-point line, adding five rebounds and a pair of steals along the way. Matt Lewis, Jalen Hodge and Zach Jacobs all joined Strickland in double figures as the Dukes held Elon to 33.9% (19-of-56) shooting from the field.
