NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Junior
Haley Quickel posted the best performances of her career this weekend, leading the way as the James Madison women's golf team opened its 2022-23 season with a fourth-place finish at the Yale Invitational, hosted at the par-71, 5,991-yard Yale Golf Course.
In just her second career tournament, Quickel racked up 12 birdies to card rounds of 71-70-71 (-1, 212) on her way to a tie for fourth among 81 competitors. After setting her career low in the opening round on Saturday, Quickel improved upon it in her afternoon loop, then moved up a spot on the leaderboard with a her second even-par round of the weekend on Sunday.
Her final score of 212 (-1) is just the ninth-ever 54-hole score under par in the history of the program and the first since
Amelia Williams carded 211 (-5) at the River Landing Classic this past spring.
As a team, the Dukes carded back-to-back rounds of 287 (+3) to close the event and climb into sole possession of fourth among 15 teams with a final score of 871. The performance is the ninth-lowest 54-hole score to par ever by a JMU team.
Williams herself had a strong start to her year, closing with a final-round 69 (-2), two shots off her career low, to vault 11 spots into a tie for 14th at 217 (+4). Junior
Kendall Turner finished four shots behind in a tie for 24th at 221 (75-70-76).
Senior
Kate Owens (79-73-71) and sophomore
Tatum Walsh (81-74-77) closed out the JMU scoring in ties for 31st and 57th, respectively. Owens' final-round 71 (E) was her 30th career round of par or better, already the program record.
