HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison went ahead 2-0 but ultimately fell in five sets (25-17, 29-27, 22-25, 28-30, 10-15) to Old Dominion on Thursday evening inside the Convocation Center.

JMU fell to 10-13 and 5-8 in Sun Belt Conference matches, while ODU improved to 16-8 and 5-6 in league play.

Brenya Reid paced all Dukes with a 29-kill output, her third straight match with at least 28 kills. Sophomore
Rebecca Watkins recorded 43 assists while also putting up eight digs and six blocks, while
Jaydyn Clemmer led the Dukes with 22 digs.

Myah Conway (26), Bryanna Jones (19), and Elisa Maggi (16) all finished with double-digit kills to lead the Monarch attack, while setter Ashlynn Belcher tallied a career-high 62 assists.

How It Happened
First Set: James Madison 25-17
- Old Dominion picked up three aces in the early going to take a 12-8 lead and force a James Madison timeout.
- JMU fell behind 14-9 but scored 10 of the next 11 points to storm ahead 19-15 as the Monarchs called a timeout of their own.
- The Dukes ended the first set on a 17-5 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Second Set: James Madison 29-27
- JMU raced out to a 14-8 lead which prompted a Monarchs timeout.
- ODU fought its way back into the set with two separate runs, eventually taking a 21-20 lead.
- The teams battled and traded points all the way to 27-27 before a Monarchs serving error and block assists from Annie Smith and Watkins gave the Dukes the second set.
Third Set: Old Dominion 25-22
- Jones picked up a kill to give ODU a 13-9 lead, and the Monarchs extended their lead to seven (17-10) as JMU called its second timeout of the set.
- The Dukes cut the Monarchs' lead to two (18-16), but ODU immediately responded with a 3-1 run to jump back ahead 22-17.
- A Conway attacking error made the score 24-22 ODU, but the Monarchs finished off the Dukes in the third with a kill from Jones.
Fourth Set: Old Dominion 30-28
- JMU went ahead by three (15-12) as Old Dominion called a timeout, but the Monarchs scored seven of eight to storm ahead 19-16.
- The Dukes went ahead 24-23 but two straight Monarch points gave the visitors a 25-24 edge.
- A Reid kill gave the Dukes a 28-27 lead, but ODU rattled off three straight to take the set, which was capped off by a pair of kills from Conway.
Fifth Set: Old Dominion 15-10
- Smith and Sarah Schnell combined for a block to tie the score at six, but three straight ODU points gave the Monarchs a 9-6 lead and forced a JMU timeout.
- JMU trimmed the deficit to three (13-10) on another kill from Reid, but Conway finished off the Dukes with a pair of kills.
Match Notes
- Despite the loss, James Madison still leads the all-time series with Old Dominion 4-1. The win for ODU gives the Monarchs a 3.0-1.0 lead in the 2024-25 TowneBank Royal Rivalry Challenge.
- Reid's 28 kills mark the 12th straight match the junior has finished with double-figure kills and the eighth time in that same span recording 20 or more.
- JMU is now 3-5 in five-set matches this season.
