Dukes Tease Temple in 14-10 Victory on Senior Day

HARRISONBURG, Va. – No. 12 James Madison overcame a first-quarter deficit to defeat American Athletic Conference foe Temple in a 14-10 victory on Saturday afternoon at Sentara Park on the Dukes' senior day.Â

The Dukes (10-3, 3-0) outdrew the Owls (8-4, 3-1) by a 17-11 margin, as sophomore attacker Maddie Epke collected 11 of JMU's draw controls to tie Maddie McDaniel's single-season draw control record of 127.

Epke and senior attacker Katelyn Morgan were dominant on the offensive side of the ball for the Dukes, as Epke found the back of the net five times and Morgan notched four goals and an assist. JMU additionally saw four more goal scorers on the day, including two goals from senior attacker Isabella Peterson.

The Dukes' defense was led by freshman defender Ava Bleckley as she secured four ground balls and caused two turnovers. Redshirt-junior midfielder Maggie Clark added two ground balls and two caused turnovers while sophomore defender Courtney Quirk recorded one ground ball and two caused turnovers and senior defender Nicholle Marshall caused three turnovers.Â

Sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Boden made five saves on 21 shots faced, allowing seven goals and amassing a .417 save percentage. Junior goalkeeper Adanya Moyer recorded a career-high 22:47 in the cage for the Dukes while making a career-high four saves on eight shots faced, allowing three goals and posting a .571 save percentage in her time in the net. Both goalkeepers scooped up a ground ball for the Dukes in the outing.Â

Temple's offense was led by Mackenzie Roth and Bella Mastropietro as they both recorded five points each. Mastropietro also added to the defensive side of the ball for the Owls with two ground balls and a caused turnover.Â

Katie Shallow and Mastropietro collected five and four draw controls, respectively, for the Owls. Goalkeeper Taylor Grollman secured a game-high five ground balls, made six saves on 31 shots faced, allowed 14 goals and posted a .300 save percentage.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter – Temple 4, James Madison 2
Roth opened the scoring for the Owls with two consecutive goals followed by Epke notching the first goal for the Dukes. Temple and JMU each found the back of the net one more time while Roth closed the frame with a first-quarter hat trick. Â
Second Quarter – James Madison 6, Temple 6
The Owls scored twice to open the frame, but the Dukes scored four consecutive goals to tie the game at the half. Epke notched her sixth hat trick of the season with the last goal of the half.Â
Third Quarter – James Madison 10, Temple 9
The Dukes continued their second-quarter run with three more goals to open the frame. The Owls responded with a 3-0 run and Peterson found the back of the net on a free-position goal to give JMU the lead back going into the final 15 minutes.  Â

Fourth Quarter – James Madison 14, Temple 10
JMU once again continued their run from the previous quarter with four consecutive goals and the Owls scored one more to end the matchup.Â

The No. 12 Dukes (10-3, 3-0) will be back on the road on when they head to Gainesville, Florida to face off with the No. 10 Gators (12-2, 3-0) on Saturday, April 13 at 11:30 a.m. The AAC showdown will be streamed on ESPN+.

- The Dukes have won 18 consecutive regular season conference matchups, with their last loss to a conference opponent occurring on March 7, 2021, when the Dukes lost to Elon, 6-5.
- JMU now holds a 36-game win streak against conference opponents at home, dating back to April 7, 2013, when the Dukes lost 16-10 to CAA-opponent Towson.Â
- With 21-consecutive home wins, the Dukes hold the second-longest home win streak in the nation. The only team with more consecutive home wins is Northwestern as the Wildcats have won 39 consecutive home games.Â
- This is the 14th consecutive season in which JMU has notched 10 or more wins, excluding the 2020 COVID-19 season.Â
- The Dukes are the first team this season to score more than 13 goals on the Owls.Â
- Morgan's five points in Saturday's outing moved her into tied-15th in all-time points in JMU history with 170, tying Kristen Gaudian ('19).
