10/6/2026 1:00:00 PM | Field Hockey
CLEVELAND – For the first time in her career, Azul Covarrubias has been named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.Â
Covarrubias was instrumental in leading JMU to a 2-0 record this past week, racking up six points and three goals. The fourth year defender helped set the tone Friday evening at Longwood, scoring the game's opening goal in a 6-1 triumph over the Lancers. Sunday's action saw Covarrubias collect the second brace of her career, netting a pair of goals in the third quarter of JMU's 3-2 comeback win over William & Mary. In totality, The Hague, The Netherlands native posted five shots, all of which were on goal and tallied an impressive .600 shooting percentage for the week.Â
Covarrubias' conference honor is the Dukes first MAC weekly award of the season and the program's first since Ava Drexler-Amey took home MAC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 29, 2025.Â
Covarrubias and the Dukes look to build on a three-game win streak Friday, hosting Bellarmine in the Dream Crazy for Greta game at 2 p.m. and on ESPN+.
