Andrew Gooderham joined the JMU field hockey coaching staff in July 2013.
Gooderham previously coached with the Harborne Hockey Club in Birmingham, England. He was tasked with developing and implementing tactics for the men’s First Team, which competes in the Midlands Premier League. He also coached the women’s Second Team to a league championship and an undefeated season in 2013. During the 2011 collegiate season, he volunteered with JMU.
“I am honored to work at such a great University with a great staff, athletes and facilities,” declared Coach Gooderham. “I am excited to work with Coach Lucas and the field hockey team.”
Before working with Harborne, Gooderham spent three seasons as the head coach of the Telford Men’s Hockey Club First Team, a member of the Midlands Premier League. In 2010, he served as the goalkeeper coach and videographer for the Wales’ Under-21 team that finished second at the European Cup.
From September 2007 to April 2010, Gooderham helped lead the Birmingham University Men’s Second XI team to the British Universities’ Sports Association league championship for the 2008-2009 season. He had previously been at the helm of Birmingham’s men’s third team.
In 2006, Gooderham led the Bourneville Ladies Second XI team in the Warwickshire Premier Division before being promoted to the Ladies First XI team, a member of the Midlands Division One league.
Gooderham started coaching in 2002 when he was an assistant coach to the under-13 boys’ team within the Cannock Hockey Club junior section.
Gooderham graduated with honors from the University of Birmingham in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in sports and material science and earned his teaching license from the University of Cumbria. He was a physical education teacher at the Arnold Lodge School for two years.
As a player, Gooderham represented England in the EuroHockey Indoor Nations championships five times.
