Jennifer Johnstone joined the James Madison field hockey program in March 2014 as an assistant coach. She also assumed the duties of the recruiting coordinator.
“I am excited to work with the current student-athletes and help them develop into extraordinary field hockey players and people,” Johnstone stated. “After speaking with Coach Morgan, I could sense her passion and energy for returning JMU to the national stage. I wanted to be a part of this transformation and felt that my strengths could be utilized.”
Johnstone most recently served as the head coach of the Husson University field hockey program, where she finished 33-25 overall over three seasons. She earned the North Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year honor in 2012 after leading Husson to a regular-season title with a 12-8 overall record and an 8-1 conference record. In 2011, the Eagles won the NAC tournament title as the fifth seed (11-9), her first season at the helm.
Prior to Husson, Johnstone served as head coach at Frostburg State University during the Bobcats transition season into the Capital Athletic Conference from being an independent program. Johnstone received her first collegiate head coaching job at Kenyon College, where she presided over the Ladies for two seasons.
Before landing at Kenyon, Johnstone was an assistant coach at Ohio Wesleyan University (2006-08), Brown University (2004-06) and Cornell University (2003-04). She holds a Level 2 certification through the U.S. Field Hockey Association.
Johnstone is a former National Field Hockey Coaches Association Regional All-American at the University of Maine (Orono), where she helped lead the Black Bears to the America East Conference championship her senior season. Johnstone was an All-Conference selection twice during her collegiate career and led the Black Bears in scoring in two of her four seasons.
After college, she was selected to the United Airlines Summer League Team for Pennsylvania and New Jersey (2004) as well as the New England Fire Elite Performance Training Center Team (2005, 2006).
“Jennifer will be a great addition to our staff,” Morgan said. “She brings a great work ethic, attention to detail and ability to identify top-notch athletes due to her connections in the hockey community. Jennifer does not shy away from a great challenge and has experience in changing a culture from good to great. We are very pleased that she has chosen to be a part of our program and believe she will be a great asset.”
