DeAndre Hayes joined James Madison men's basketball as a graduate assistant ahead of the 2026-27 season on Monday, July 13.
Hayes arrives in Harrisonburg after serving as an assistant coach at North Carolina Wesleyan during the 2025-26 season, where he helped lead the Battling Bishops to the USA South Conference Tournament Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance. He also was a graduate assistant for North Carolina Central during the 2024-25 season.
As a player, Hayes played at SUNY Fredonia from 2022-24 and Gordon State College, a NJCAA Division I school, from 2020-22. During his time at Fredonia, Hayes served as a two-year team captain, setting the single-game program record with 10 assists.
In the classroom, Hayes earned a Master's Degree in business from NC Central in May 2026 and also holds degrees from SUNY Fredonia and Gordon State. At SUNY Fredonia, he was also named the first Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year in program history.
Hayes is a native of Durham, N.C.
