Connor Wexter completed his first season on the JMU volleyball staff in 2024 after being hired on May 3, 2024.
Wexter arrives in Harrisonburg after most recently serving as the Vice President of the Method, Opportunity, Drive (MOD) volleyball program, which included 79 total youth girls and boys volleyball teams. In his role, he oversaw seven full-time staff members along with helping run all operations for the organization.
"The first thing I look for when hiring coaches for our program is culture fit," Steinbrecher said. "Connor completely stood out from the rest during the process. He is exceptional at forming meaningful relationships and is passionate about learning and growth. It was easy to see how kind, thoughtful, driven and competitive he is after just one conversation. His Hall of Fame status and exceptional playing career speak to his expertise on the court, especially setting and running an effective offense. There is no doubt Connor will make a huge impact on the Dukes!"
The native of New Lenox, Ill., comes to JMU after spending the 2023 season as a special assistant for the University of Loyola-Chicago women's volleyball team. He also served as an assistant coach with the Ramblers' men's volleyball team for four seasons (2016-20), overseeing four AVCA top-15 finishes and 80 wins in his tenure while also being named to the AVCA "30-under-30" list, which recognizes young, up-and-coming coaches in the industry.
"I am thrilled to be joining the James Madison University Volleyball orogram!" Wexter said. "The culture of JMU volleyball is evident in the student-athletes, staff, and campus community, so having a chance to add to it will be a true honor. I am extremely grateful to have the opportunity to work and learn alongside Lauren and Charlie each day, and I am fired up to get in the gym with such an incredible group of Dukes."
After wrapping up a four-year playing career at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisc., Wexter worked as a graduate assistant for his alma mater from 2014-16, where he worked with recruiting, practice planning, and scouting, along with game day coaching and operations. He earned a Master's of Education from Carthage in 2016.
The 2014 graduate of Carthage was a four-year starter for the Embers, where he was named an AVCA All-American in each season, along with three first-team selections. He was named the Continental Volleyball Conference Player of the Year in 2013 and ended his playing career as the program's all-time leader in assists and is in the Carthage Athletics Hall of Fame.
Wexter is married to former JMU volleyball star Lizzy Briones.
