Lauren Roper has been part of the James Madison sports medicine team since 2017 and currently serves as an associate athletic trainer with the women’s volleyball program.
Following the 2021-22 school year, she was recognized as the 2023 Virginia Athletic Trainers’ Association College/ University Athletic Trainer of the Year. She began her tenure in Harrisonburg as a graduate assistant athletic trainer, working primarily with men’s and women’s tennis and track & field. After earning her master’s degree in sport and recreation leadership in 2019, Roper moved into full-time work with the Dukes and worked with swim & dive prior to joining volleyball.
While at JMU, she spearheaded the creation of Dukes Let’s Talk, a student-athlete mental health and wellness peer support group. Lauren has continued to advance her knowledge and skills in the behavioral health space with training such as Mental Health First Aid, safeTALK, and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST). She obtained a certificate in Sport Social Work from the University of Michigan in 2024. Lauren also volunteers for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention - Virginia Chapter on the education and advocacy subcommittees. In this role, she works alongside JMU students and staff in the Counseling Center and Terror Management Lab each year to plan and execute the AFSP Out of the Darkness Campus Walk.
Prior to coming to JMU, Roper spent her undergraduate career at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training in 2017.
