James Madison Director of Athletics Matt Roan announced the hiring of Dr. Joseph Volpi as the department's team physician in July of 2024. Dr. Volpi leads the holistic care and well-being of all JMU student-athletes as part of the integrated health and sports performance team.

Even more, the holistic care of our student-athletes is our highest priority when it comes to areas like injury prevention, injury treatment, mental health, and more. Along with the recent hire of Brandon DeSantis as head of our integrated health and sports performance unit, these two individuals will chart a vital path in our student-athlete care, presently and into the future. Dr. Volpi most recently served as team physician at the University of Oregon while also completing his teaching fellowship. He served multiple teams and student-athletes with the Ducks, with experiences including accompanying the team to its Fiesta Bowl and NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament appearances. He was also on-site physician for multiple NCAA Championships hosted at Oregon.

Other experience in sports medicine has included multiple occassions serving professional athletes in the NFL, MLB and WNBA. He also most recently worked on the medical staff pool for the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) and previously at the US Olympic Trianing Center in Colorado Springs. He was also part of the athletic medical team for the IRONman world championship in Kona.

Volpi completed other fellowships in sports medicine at the University of Texas, Tyler in 2023, with the American Academic of Family Physicians in 2020 and with the Academy of Wilderness Medicine in 2018.

Originally a nuclear engineer in the US Navy, Volpi was stationed in Charleston, Norfolk and Washington, D.C. He used the GI Bill to earn a degree in human physiology, collecting his Bachelor of Science from Oregon in 2010. He then decided to pursue medicine and finished his doctorate from the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland in 2015.

Volpi was a pole vaulter at Lane Community College in Oregon before then completing his degree at Oregon. He still competes in ultramarathons and triathlons while also enjoying exploring the outdoors. His wife, Jen, was a distance runner in cross country and track and field at both Division I Portland and at Western Oregon. The couple has one son, Wes.
