History of Savage Natatorium
Godwin Hall is the hub of JMU's Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. The facility includes Savage Natatorium, home to Swimming and Diving, as well as Sinclair Gymnasium, which hosts Women's Volleyball. Godwin Hall is also home to offices for JMU's athletics administration as well as locker rooms and offices for several sports programs.
The building was authorized by the Virginia General Assembly when Mills E. Godwin, Jr. was governor. It was completed in 1972 and named for the governor and his wife, Katherine, a JMU graduate.
Savage Natatorium, an eight-lane, 25-yard facility with two 1-meter boards, two 3-meter boards and seats for 800 spectators, was named for Dorothy L. Savage, a former physical education teacher. The pool deck is also home to a spotting rig with trampoline, dry board and crash mat, a diving rig over the dry board, as well as two TiVo TV setups for use during diving.
In 2016, the pool floor was redone and a new Daktronics video board for improved results display was installed. New aquatic-specific LED lights were installed in 2019.
