HARRISONBURG, Va., Aug. 26, 2005 — James Madison eked out a 3-2 win over Richmond and Loyola used two late goals to beat East Carolina 4-2 in Friday night's opening round of the JMU/Comfort Inn Invitational Women's Soccer Tournament.
JMU sophomore Melanie Schaffer's (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) penalty kick in the 76th minute lifted the Dukes to the victory over Richmond.
Less than two minutes before Schaffer's deciding goal the Spiders had tied the game when freshman Jessie Wolfe (Germantown, Md./ Damascus) scored off a pass from freshman Robyn Brooks (Salt Lake City, Utah/East) at 74:07.
But a Richmond player was called for a hand ball in the penalty box at 75:43, giving the Dukes the opportunity to go ahead 3-2 on Schaeffer's ensuing PK.
The Spiders had several scoring chances in the final two minutes, but one shot sailed just wide of the goal and two others were stopped by JMU senior goalkeeper Jessica Hussey (Kanata, Ontario/Holy Trinity).
In the day's first game, Loyola senior Ali Andrzejewski (Lutherville, Md./McDonogh) scored a hat trick, but it was sophomore Tyhira Glenn's (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) goal in the 83rd minute that put the Greyhounds ahead for good in their win over East Carolina.
Andrzejewski scored the game's first two goals to give Loyola a 2-0 advantage with 8:13 left in the opening half.
East Carolina stormed back, however. The Pirates cut the lead to 2-1 on senior Ashley Stopa's (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) goal with 5:31 left before intermission. ECU then tied the game when senior Meghan McCallion (Bay Shore, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored off a pass from Stopa in the 65th minute.
The Greyhounds regained the lead when Glenn's five-yard shot found the back of the net with 7:52 left in regulation. Freshman Lea Day (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) was credited with an assist on her crossing pass to Glenn.
Andrzejewski netted an insurance goal with 4:58 left, taking a pass from Glenn and sending it into the goal from the edge of the penalty box.
The JMU/Comfort Inn Tournament continues Sunday when Richmond meets East Carolina at 11 a.m., followed by JMU vs. Loyola at 1:30 p.m.
