HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 15, 2006 -- Four players scored for the Dukes' women's soccer team as James Madison beat Northeastern 4-2 Sunday afternoon at the JMU Soccer Complex.
The Dukes improved to 7-8-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Northeastern dropped to 8-5-2 overall and 4-3-1 in conference play.
JMU got goals from senior Natalie Ewell (Richmond, Va./James River), junior Melanie Schaffer (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton), senior Sarah Cebulski (Manotick, Ontario/ St. Mark's), and freshman Corky Julien (Williamstown, Ontario/Char-Lan District).
Scoring on their first two shots of the game, the Dukes scored twice in the first 12:12.
Ewell scored on an 11-yard shot just 4:17 into the match, with assists coming from Schaffer and sophomore Kimmy Germain (McLean, Va./Langley). On the second goal, Schaffer blasted a 25-yard shot into the left corner off a pass from Germain.
Northeastern's Sophia Palmquist (Goteborg, Sweden/Bernadottesymnasidt) then scored at 42:21 off of a penalty kick.
Germain earned her third assist of the day, tying the school record, when she sent a pass ahead to Cebulski, who scored on a 15-yard shot 10:05 into the second half.
The Huskies managed to score again off senior Kristin Kowalik's (Vikingstad, Sweden/Katedralskolan) unassisted goal at 60:33. Kowalik got the ball off the JMU defense, dribbled into the penalty box where she got past freshman goalkeeper Diane Wszalek (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) and shot on an open net.
However, JMU increased its lead again with a fourth and final goal at 76:33 when Julien scored off an assist by junior Laura Hertz (Newport News, Va./Woodside). Hertz's free kick at midfield found Julien, who dribbled toward the goal and hit a 12-yard shot into the net.
For the game JMU held a 20-8 advantage on shots.
JMU's Wszalek made two saves. Northeastern goalkeeper Annie Perofsky (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) made eight saves.
Germain's three assists tied the school record held by seven other players. The last time a JMU player had three assists in a game was in 1999 when Christy Yacono had three in a Sept. 19 game versus Villanova.
