BLACKSBURG, Va., Sept. 8, 2006 -- Freshman
Jess Remmes' (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) goal with 7:25 left in regulation lifted the
James Madison women's soccer team to a 3-2 win at
Virginia Tech Friday night.
The Dukes won their second straight game and improved to 2-3, while Virginia Tech lost for the first time this season and dropped to 3-1-1.
Remmes' goal came on a shot from six yards out and was assisted by senior
Sarah Cebulski (Manotick, Ontario/St. Mark's).
The Dukes never trailed in the match but Tech rallied to tie the game twice.
JMU struck first when sophomore
Teri Maykoski (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) scored off a pass from junior
Annie Lowry (Butler, Pa./Butler) on a corner-kick play in the 21st minute.
Less than 10 minutes later the Hokies tied the game on a goal by Heather Hallberg at 29:35.
In the second half the Dukes again went ahead after Cebulski scored 10:19 into the period. Assists on the goal came from senior
Natalie Ewell (Richmond, Va./James River) and junior
Melanie Schaffer (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton).
A little over seven minutes later Tech's Mallory Jones scored in a scramble in the penalty box, tying the game at 2-2.
Each team took 14 shots on goal, and both JMU red-shirt freshman goalkeeper
Missy Reimert (Lenhartsville, Pa./Kutztown) and Tech goalie Mallory Soldner made three saves.
The game was part of Virginia Tech Classic. JMU will face nationally 20th-ranked Wake Forest in the tournament's second round Sunday at 1 p.m.
