SOFTBALL SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST NORFOLK STATE

NORFOLK, Va., March 8, 2007 ? The James Madison University softball team outscored Norfolk State 17-1 in a two game sweep on Wednesday. The Dukes won the first game 8-0 in five innings and won the second 9-1 in six innings.
In game one, the Dukes put up at least one run in every inning. The first run was scored when Amber Kirk (Hamilton, Va./Loudoun County) singled through the left side and Katie George (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) came in to score from second.
The Dukes added another run in the second when Brittney Dyson (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) hit her second home run of the season over the right field fence to put the Dukes up 2-0.
JMU added four runs in the third, one in the fourth and the final run in the fifth when Tamara Carrera (San Diego, Calif./Bonita Vista) singled to left center and Kaitlyn Wernsing (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) scored.
Wernsing led the Dukes going 2-for-2 with two RBIs and scoring twice.
Courtney Simons (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) also went 2-for-2 and had an RBI.
Branden Moss (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) pitched a five-inning shutout, giving up only three hits and striking out five.
In game two, JMU again struck early by putting up four runs in the top of the first inning.
Kirk was again the first Duke to record an RBI when she singled to right field and advanced to second when the right fielder misplayed the ball and it rolled to the fence. George and Brittney Lyddane (Manassas, Va./Osourn Park) both came in to score on the play.
Later in the inning Carrera singled to left center and Simons and Kirk scored. The hit gave JMU a 4-0 lead after the first inning.
The Dukes added three runs in the third. Sally Smith (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) singled through the left side and Wernsing came in to score.
George then came up and tripled to right field, knocking in Smith and Dyson to give JMU a 5-0 lead after three innings.
Norfolk State scored a run in the bottom of the third when Jewel White hit a high chopper to the shortstop and reached first. Hitomi Greene came in to score from third on the play to make the score 7-1 after four innings.
The Dukes scored two runs in the sixth when Simons singled and both Lyddane and George scored to put the Dukes up 9-1.
The Spartans would not get a run in the bottom of the sixth and the game ended.
