HARRISONBURG, Va., Aug. 31, 2007 ? Marshall came up with a 1-0 win over James Madison and 23rd-ranked (NSCAA) North Carolina Greensboro shut out Georgetown 3-0 in Friday night's opening round of the JMU/Blue Ridge Shadows Golf Club Men's Soccer Tournament.
The Thundering Herd scored its lone goal in the 70th minute. Senior Avneet Shergill (Vancouver, Wash./Mountain View) scored the deciding goal on a pass from Jermaine Johnson (Kingston, Jamaica/Camperdown).
The Dukes could not capitalize on any of numerous scoring opportunities, as they attempted 13 shots to seven for Marshall.
In the 35th minute, JMU junior Nick Zimmerman (Tampa Bay, Fla./Wharton) took a shot off a rebound, and it sailed just wide of the goal. A header by freshman Lucas Domgoergen (Wuerselen, Germany/Heinrich-Heine) in the 80th minute was saved by Marshall senior goalkeeper Brad Kennedy (Lewisburg, W.Va./Greenbrier).
Kennedy made eight saves to get the shutout.
JMU freshman goalkeeper Ken Manahan (Fredericskburg, Va./Chancellor) made three stops, including a kick save on a point-blank shot by junior Jira Cooley (Seattle, Wash./Redmond) in the 88th minute.
