HARRISONBURG, Va. – With a chance to move into sole possession of first place in the Sun Belt, James Madison men's soccer (6-4-2, 3-0-1 SBC) capitalized on that opportunity Saturday night, defeating Georgia State (6-5-2, 0-3-1 SBC) 1-0 at Sentara Park.Â
The win was JMU's third clean sheet in conference play and sixth of the season as Erik Jaspers yet again pitched another shutout in goal while making a pair of saves. JMU's lone goal was scored by Dylan Randazzo and assisted by Daniel Bunk in the 41st minute.Â
The Dukes outpaced the Panthers 12-4 in total shots, 7-2 in shots on goal and 3-2 in corner kicks. Individually, Chris Niblock led JMU in shots taken, offering up five attempts, all of which were on-target. Randazzo totaled three shots, two of which were on-goal including the score. Manuel Lolas, Daniel Reiter and Luis Fuentes all chipped in a shot each to aid the Dukes attack.Â
Quoting Head Coach Paul ZazenskiÂ
"A very professional 90 minute performance tonight," Zazenski said. "The guys stuck to the game plan and executed at a very high rate. So proud of the collective effort and to get another shut out."
How It HappenedÂ
- Niblock offered up the Dukes' first shot of the night, taking one aimed at the right bottom corner from outside the box but seeing it saved by GSU's keeper Jackson Burrell.Â
- As time winded down in the first half, JMU got the eventual game-winning goal off the right foot of Randazzo. The goal was set up by strong defense by Bunk, who stole the ball away and got a counter-attack started. Bunk sent a strong pass to Randazzo along the right side of the box and the first year defender took care of the rest.Â
- In the 44th minute, the Panthers launched one of two shots on goal. Jaspers was ready for it, swatting the ball out of harm's way to keep the Dukes ahead 1-0 heading into the half.Â
Game Notes
- JMU's 1-0 win over GSU gives the Dukes sole possession of first place in the Sun Belt Conference as the Dukes hold 10 points with three wins and a draw.Â
- The win also pushed the Dukes unbeaten streak to seven games, dating back to a 2-0 win over Longwood on Sept. 11.Â
- Jaspers is the only goalie in the SBC to have multiple shutouts in league play, holding three clean sheets against conference foes and only yielding one goal through four total matches.Â
- Randazzo scored his second career goal, bumping his point total up to four as the Goshen, N.Y. native has taken just seven total shots this season.Â
