SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER IN CHARLOTTESVILLE

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., March 12, 2008 ? The JMU softball team (9-10) split a pair of games against the University of Virginia Wednesday. The Dukes took the first game of the doubleheader 4-0 but dropped the second game 2-1.
In the second game of the day, JMU junior pitcher Shannon Outman and UVa pitcher Karla Wilburn traded scoreless innings through the first four innings. The Cavaliers finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth on catcher Kelly Haller's two-run double to right center.
The Dukes would responded in the top half of the sixth when junior shortstop Amber Kirk doubled to right center field. Sophomore centerfielder Courtney Simons would come all the way around from first to score on the play.
Simons went 2-for-2 with a run scored, while Kirk finished the day 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Freshmen Katie Spitzer and Melissa Hill would keep Madison alive in the top of the seventh. Both player's delivered pinch-hit singles with two outs, but JMU was unable to capitalize.
Outman picked up the loss for the Dukes falling to 2-1. She pitched six innings, giving up five hits, two runs, walked four and struck out four.
In the first game of the day, the Dukes hit three solo home runs, including two by junior catcher Julia Dominguez, and went on to defeat the Cavs 4-0. Dominguez became the 11th JMU player to home twice in a game, launching a shot over the right field wall to lead off the second inning, and following that up with a shot to left field in the fourth.
