HARRISONBURG, Va., April 20, 2008 ? The James Madison softball team wrapped up its weekend series with UNC Wilmington with an 11-3 win in six innings Sunday at the JMU Softball Complex.
Madison improved to 24-20 overall and 8-6 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the win while UNCW dropped to 12-27-1 and 3-12 with the loss.
The Dukes pounded the Seahawks pitching as they collected 13 hits, including three home runs, in the series finale. Junior catcher Julia Dominguez (Sterling, Va./Park View) and junior third baseman Amber Kirk (Hamilton, Va./Loudoun County) each homered for the seventh time to remain tied for the team lead. Sophomore right fielder Shannon Moxey (Church Road, Va./Mills Godwin) collected the team's third homer, her second of the season.
JMU took an early lead as they scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning off Wilmington starter Samantha Lisowsky. Moxey led of the inning with a single up the middle and moved to second on a single by Kirk. Both runners advanced a base on an error by the UNCW left fielder. Senior Jenn Chavez (Upland, Calif./Upland) followed with a ground out to second that plated Moxey.
For Chavez it was her third RBI of the series and 91st of her career. She is just one shy of the school record shared by Katie Jaworski (2002-05) and Katie George (2004-07). She finished the day 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and the one RBI.
After the Chavez groundout, junior second baseman Kaitlyn Wernsing (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) doubled down the left field line to score Moxey. The hit extended Wernsing's hitting streak to a season-long 10 games. She finished the day 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.
