HARRISONBURG, Va., May 4, 2008 ? The James Madison softball team wrapped up its regular season Sunday with a 4-1 win over the University of Delaware. The Dukes closed out the season on an 11-game winning streak, finishing third in the Colonial Athletic Association. They will face second-seeded Georgia State in first round of next weekend's CAA tournament.
JMU improved to 30-20 overall this season and 14-6 in the CAA with the win. Delaware dropped to 22-26 overall and 4-17 in conference play.
It was senior day at the JMU Softball Complex as the Dukes honored three graduating seniors who were playing in their final home game. First baseman Jenn Chavez (Upland, Calif./Upland), outfielder Katie Cochran (Reston, Va./South Lakes) and outfielder Megan Forbes (Fincastle, Va./Lord Botetourt) were all honored in a pre-game ceremony.
The game itself was a tight one as JMU took a 2-1 lead after one inning and held on to win 4-1 over the Blue Hens. Cochran was one of four Dukes to pick up multiple hits as the Dukes pounded out 10 hits off Delaware pitching, all of them singles.
The Blue Hens got on the board early, as center fielder Katie Lee singled up the middle to lead off the inning. After a strikeout by JMU starter Meredith Felts (Greenville, N.C./J.H. Rose) Lee stole second and third before scoring on a single up the middle by shortstop Quinn Megargel.
Lee went 3-for-4 with a triple and a run scored and was the only Blue Hen with more than one hit in the game.
Madison immediately responded in the bottom half of the inning, picking up two runs off Delaware starter Samantha Shawn. Sophomore right fielder Shannon Moxey
