HARRISONBURG, Va., Jan. 18, 2009 -- James Madison sophomore guard Dawn Evans (Clarksville, Tenn./Northeast) scored her team's last 22 points and finished with a game-high 30 points as the Dukes edged Drexel 60-56 in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball Sunday afternoon at the JMU Convocation Center.
The Dukes upped their overall record to 11-5 and their CAA record to 4-1. JMU won for the eighth time in its last nine games.
Drexel's overall record now stands at 8-8, and the Dragons are 3-2 in CAA play.
Evans, the nation's leading scorer, netted her team's final 22 points in the last 10:22. During that span she hit two three-pointers, a jumper from just inside the three-point line, a 15-foot jumper and a layup. She also knocked down 10 of 12 free-throw attempts and was six for eight from the foul line in the final 17.6 seconds.
In a battle of two of the nation's leading scorers, Drexel junior forward Gabriela Marginean (Cluj-Napoca, Romania/Mt. de Chantal Academy, W.Va.) led the Dragons with 25 points. Marginean entered the game ranked fourth in the NCAA in scoring at 22.8 points per game.
