COLUMBIA, S.C., Feb. 20, 2009 ? The James Madison softball team improved to 2-0 at the Gamecock Invitational as the Dukes shut out Tennessee Chattanooga 2-0 on the campus of South Carolina Friday.
JMU ran its winning streak to seven games and improved to 8-3, while the Mocs feel to 5-8.
Senior right-hander Meredith Felts (Greenville, N.C./J.H. Rose) picked up the win for Madison, improving to 2-1 on the season. She dominated the UTC lineup, facing just three batters above the minimum.
The Dukes broke through in the top of the fourth inning, capitalizing on a Moc error to open up a 2-0 lead. Senior second baseman Kaitlyn Wernsing (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) kicked things off reaching on an error by the first baseman and moved to second on a single by junior first baseman Shannon Moxey (Church Road, Va./Mills Godwin). Both runners scored on a double to right field by senior third baseman Amber Kirk (Hamilton, Va./Loudoun County).
Kirk finished the game 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs to lead the JMU offense. Senior catcher Julia Dominguez (Sterling, Va./Park View) went 1-for-1 with two walks.
That would be all the offense the Dukes first-team All-CAA ace would need as Felts picked up her second shutout of the season. The Greenville, N.C. native allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out eight.
UTC's biggest threat came in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Mocs loaded the bases on a single, a walk and a fielder's choice where Moc first baseman Tiffany Baker beat out a throw to second to extend the inning.
