SOFTBALL POUNDS GEORGE WASHINGTON IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP

HARRISONBURG, Va., March 25, 2009 ? The James Madison softball scored 24 runs and pounded out 27 hits to sweep George Washington University in non-conference softball action on Wednesday. The Dukes won game one at the JMU Softball Complex 7-0 before running away with game two 17-0.
Madison improved to 18-6 overall while dropping the Colonials 8-15.
JMU scored a run in all four of its at bats in game two, including 11 in the second inning, and senior right-hander Jenny Clohan (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) shut down GWU to lead the Dukes to a 17-0 win.
Madison scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Junior first baseman Shannon Moxey (Church Road, Va./Mills Godwin) led off the game with a triple to right center and scored three batters later when senior Amber Kirk (Hamilton, Va./Loudoun County) singled up the middle.
The Dukes broke the game open on inning later, pushing 11 runs across on nine hits and four Colonial errors. Junior center fielder Brittney Dyson (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) reached second to lead off the inning on an error. After a walk and a passed ball put two runners in scoring position, Moxey collected her second hit of the game to plate Dyson. Junior right fielder Courtney Simons (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) made it 4-0 with a single through the right side, plating junior left fielder Chel'sea Ryan (Sandston, Va./Henrico) and Moxey.
Moxey, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week, went 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, three runs scored and three RBI. She collected hits in both of Wednesday's games to run her hitting streak to eight games. Simons went 2-for-2 with a run score and an RBI. She also had hits in both games to run her hitting streak to a team season-high 10 games.
