ATLANTA, GA., Mar. 31, 2009 ? The James Madison women's golf team shot a third-round 308 to move up one spot and finish 12th out of 13 teams at the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate on Tuesday. The Dukes shot rounds of 314 and 319 on Monday to finish with a 941.
Leading the way for Madison was freshman Nicole Sakamoto (Honolulu, Haw./Kalani) who carded a 80-76-72=228 to finish tied for 22nd. Sakamoto tied her career-low round on Tuesday and has now shot four rounds under 75.
She was followed by sophomores Kelly Lynch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Laura Mesa (Manizales, Columbia/Colegio Granadino) who tied for 44th and 47th respectively. Lynch recorded a 77-79-80=236, while Mesa carded a 77-82-79=238.
Freshman Valentina Sanmiguel (Bogota, Columbia/Gimasio La Montana) tied for 50th after shooting a 80-82-77=239, while sophomore Catrin Gunnarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden/Sanda Gymnasiet) finished in a tie for 61st after carding a 86-83-80=249.
Georgia State's Sandra Maier beat out 67 other golfers to win the individual championship. She shot a 74-70-72=216 to finish at even-par and edge out teammate Anna Scott by one stroke. The Panther duo beat out a pair Furman players as Stefanie Kenoyer (73-69-77=219) and Blair Lamb (73-72-75=220) finished third and fourth respectively.
Maryland's Jessica Hollandsworth (78-71-72=221) rounded out the tournament's top five in fifth place.
After placing the top two golfers and three in the top 11, Georgia State won the team championship after shooting rounds of 297-291-298=886. They beat out Furman (300-290-305=895) by nine strokes.
