HARRISONBURG, Va., April 22, 2009 ? Georgetown got three runs in the sixth inning and two innings of shutout relief from right-hander Jennifer Connell to pick up a 4-2 non-conference win over James Madison at the JMU Softball Complex on Wednesday.
The Dukes fell to 26-14 with the loss, while the Hoyas improved to 14-25.
GU broke the game open in the top of the sixth inning, scoring three runs on a pair of hits to extend its lead to 4-0. Second baseman Kelsie Hanson led off the inning with a single up the middle before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt. Right fielder Kristi Preuss drew a one-out walk to put two runners on for shortstop Samantha Peters. Peters battled sophomore right-hander Heather Widner (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Ready) to a 2-2 count before lofting a fly ball that landed just inside the right field line to score Hanson.
The double chased Widner from the game after she went the first 5.1 innings. Her final line had her giving up four hits, four runs, two earned runs, walking one and striking out four. The native of Columbus, Ohio fell to 0-2 in four starts this season.
Senior right-hander Jenny Clohan (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) came in to relieve Widner, inducing a groundout before a JMU error allowed both Peters and Preuss to score a pair of insurance runs. Clohan pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing two hits.
The Dukes fought back in the bottom half of the inning, finally getting to Georgetown starter Mackensey Carter for two runs. Junior center fielder Brittney Dyson (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) led things off with a walk and moved to third on a double by junior first baseman Shannon Moxey (Church Road, Va./Mills Godwin). Junior right fielder Courtney Simons (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) plated both runners with a triple into the left-center field gap.
