CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Nov. 20, 2010 - James Madison swimming and diving placed eighth out of eight teams at the 2010 Nike Cup on Saturday at the University of North Carolina's Maurice J. Koury Natatorium.
North Carolina dominated a strong field of competitors to win with a score of 1,569.5. Duke was second with 503 points followed by South Carolina (495), West Virginia (359), Navy (309), East Carolina (281), Old Dominion (276.5) and JMU (139). North Carolina State only participated in diving events and finished with 25 points.
The Dukes collected 29 points on the day including 14 in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Dukes team of senior Carly Gibson (Bethesda, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) and juniors Catalina Mendieta (Parkland, Fla./Marjory Stoneman Douglas), Eva Hannesdottir (Seltjarnarnes, Iceland/Kvennaskolinn) and Rebecca Hunt (Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker) finished 10th in a time of 3:30.52.
A pair of Dukes earned points in the 1,650 freestyle as juniors Melissa Helock (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains Fanwood) and Lauren Kranz (Clifton, Va./James Robinson) finished 12th and 14th, respectively. Helock swam the race in 17:23.05 to earn five points while Kranz was right behind her at 17:28.01 for three points.
Hannesdottir picked up a 14th-place finish in the 100 free with a time of 52.66. Sophomore Andrea Criscuolo (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) finished 13th in the 200 butterfly for the Dukes final points of the meet. Criscuolo touched the wall in a time of 2:04.70 to record four points.
JMU has two months before its next swim meet as they will travel to Washington, D.C. to take on Georgetown and American in a double-dual meet at 1 p.m. on January 15.
