MIAMI LAKES, Fla., Feb. 16, 2010 - The James Madison women's golf team carded a 311 in Tuesday's final round to finish sixth at the Hurricane Invitational. The 17-team, 54-hole tournament was played at the par-72, 6,199-yard Don Shula Golf Resort in Miami Lakes, Fla.
The Dukes, who fired rounds of 305 and 299 to sit tied for fifth entering Tuesday, finished with a 915, 21 strokes behind tournament champion Central Florida.
Junior Mary Chamberlain (Dennis, Mass. Suffield Academy) was Madison's top individual competitor in the field of 90, finishing third. She ended the event one stroke off her season-low for a 54-hole event after carding a 76-70-75=221. Her season-low was a 220 recorded at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate on Oct. 19-20. In Monday's second round, she tied her season- and career-low for an 18-hole round with a 70.
It was the fifth top-10 and second top-five finish of Chamberlain's career.
Sophomore Nicole Sakamoto (Honolulu, Hawaii/Kalani) finished tied for 41st after shooting a 76-78-78=232, while junior Laura Mesa (Manizales, Colombia/Colegio Granadino) rebounded from a tough day on Monday to finish tied for 49th (74-83-78=235). Sophomore Valentina Sanmiguel (Bogota, Colombia/Gimasio la Montaña) tied for 54th (79-74-83=236) and junior Catrin Gunnarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden/Sanda Gymnasiet) tied for 60th (81-77-80=238).
Junior Kelly Lynch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) participated as an individual and finished tied for 84th (89-84-82=255).
San Diego St.'s Christine Wong (69-74-74=217), the tournament's individual leader after all three days, carded a 74 on Tuesday to finish three strokes ahead of Aruka Felgueroso (72-72-75=220) of Coastal Carolina. Chamberlain finished third, one shot back of Felgueroso, followed by a three-way tie for fourth between Georgia St.'s Catherine Madsen (74-70-78=222), East Tennessee St.'s Nina Muehl (75-76-71=222) and Charleston Southern's Olivia Higgins (72-75-75=222).
Central Florida made up eight strokes on Georgia St. on Tuesday to take home the tournament's team championship. The Knights shot a 307-293-294=894 to top the defending champion Panthers (292-300-303=895) by one stroke. ETSU (304-300-292=896) finished third, followed by San Diego St. (303-293-304=900) in fourth and Coastal Carolina (296-304-302=
