TOWSON, Md., April 9, 2010 -- Redshirt senior Kim Griffin's (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) goal with 1:14 left in sudden-death overtime lifted the 12th-ranked James Madison (1-0, 8-2) women's lacrosse team to a 10-9 victory at eighth-ranked Towson (1-1, 7-3) in Colonial Athletic Association play Friday evening.
Griffin's goal finished off a game in which JMU had jumped out to a 5-0 lead only to see Towson score six consecutive goals to go ahead 6-5 midway through the second half.
Hillary Fratzke scored three times in the 6-0 run by the defending CAA champion Tigers, including the goal that gave Towson its 6-5 lead with 16:06 left in regulation.
JMU tied the game at 6-6 on a free-position goal by redshirt freshman Casey Ancarrow (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll) at 14:05. The Dukes then took a 7-6 lead on a score by sophomore Alex Napoli (Highland, Md./River Hill), assisted by Griffin, at 11:55.
However, 23 seconds later, Towson's Nikki Marcinik scored to even the game at 7-7.
But another Ancarrow score put the Dukes back on top, 8-7, at 8:35.
Just over a minute later Towson again tied the game, when Marcinik scored off a pass from Jacie Kendall with 7:34 left to play.
In the remainder of regulation play Towson had three opportunities to take the lead. JMU senior goalkeeper Morgan Kelly (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) stopped a shot by Marcinik with 6:49 left, and in the final minute a shot by Fratzke was high and one by Jess Dunn sailed wide of the goal.
In overtime, JMU senior Meredith Torr (Timonium, Md./Bryn Mawr) controlled the opening draw, and Ancarrow scored 1:22 into the first three-minute period to put the Dukes ahead 9-8. JMU had two other scoring chances, but a shot by Ancarrow with nine seconds left was high, and an attempt by sophomore Ariel Lane (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) as time expired went wide of the goal.
In the second three-minute overtime half, Fratzke gained control of the opening draw, and Kendall converted a free-position attempt just 13 seconds into the period to tie the game at 9-9.
Towson goalkeeper Mary Teeters made stops on a shot by Griffin with five seconds remaining and on another shot by Ancarrow as the period ended.
In the deciding overtime period, the opening draw was controlled by JMU sophomore Monica Zabel (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron), and Griffin's goal came on the Dukes' only shot of the period.
Ancarrow led all players with three goals and two assists for five points, and Zabel scored twice for the Dukes.
Towson was led by Fratzke's three goals. Marcinik had two goals and an assist, and Dunn also scored twice.
Towson held a 30-24 shot advantage. Kelly made 10 saves, and Teeter finished with eight saves.
The Dukes next play at Delaware on Sunday, April 11 (1 p.m.).
NOTE: Griffin has scored the deciding goal in JMU's last three victories, all of which have been over Top 20 teams. That includes a 13-12 victory at then 13th-ranked Princeton on March 17 and a 10-9 win at fifth-ranked Virginia on March 24.
