FARMVILLE, Va., April 5, 2010 - Junior Mary Chamberlain (Dennis, Mass./Suffield Academy) and sophomore Nicole Sakamoto (Honolulu, Hawaii/Kalani) respectively finished the day in first and tied for second to put the James Madison women's golf team in second after 36 holes in the Tina Barrett Invitational at The Manor Resort Golf Club in Farmville, Va.
The Dukes carded a 299 and 306 on Monday to sit in second out of eight teams, five strokes back of Longwood.
Chamberlain holds a two-shot lead over Sakamoto and Longwood's Ariel Witmer after firing a 2-over-par 146. She was the only player in the field of 44 to break par in either round, shooting rounds of 71 and 75. Sakamoto carded a 73-75=148.
Juniors Catrin Gunnarsson (Bankeyrd, Sweden/Sanda Gymnasiet) and Laura Mesa (Manizales, Colombia/Colegio Granadino) both finished the day in the top 12. Gunnarsson is 10th after shooting an 80-74=154, while Mesa is tied for 12th with a 75-82=157. Sophomore Valentina Sanmiguel's (Bogota, Colombia/Gimasio la Montaña) 80-85=165 puts her in 28th entering Tuesday's final round.
Junior Kelly Lynch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) is competing in the event as an individual. She is tied for 15th with a 73-85=158.
Tournament host Longwood placed four golfers in the top eight to lead the eight-team field. Brooke Mallory is one-shot back of teammate Ariel Witmer in fourth after firing a 77-72=149. Ha Lee (77-74=151) is tied for fifth followed by teammate Kameron Carter (76-76=152) in a tie for eighth.
Cleveland State's Katie Broere (75-75=150 - fifth) and Oakland's Elizabeth Ecker (77-74=151) are the only two players in the top ten from a school other than JMU or Longwood.
The Dukes hold a 29-shot lead over Marshall. The Thundering Herd carded a 309-325=634 to sit in third. Methodist (321-322=643) is fourth and Towson rounds out the top five with a 319-333=652.
Play concludes on Tuesday with a shotgun start scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. start.
