HARRISONBURG, Va., Sept. 19, 2010 - James Madison freshman Haley Miller's (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) first college goal lifted the Dukes' women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Navy Sunday afternoon at the JMU Soccer Complex.
JMU evened its record at 4-4-0 while ending a three-game losing streak, while Navy dropped to 4-5-1 as the Mids saw their two-game winning streak end.
The game-winning play was set up by senior Teresa Rynier (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley), who lofted a ball from the right side of the field to the left side of the box. Miller headed the ball back across the box and into the right corner of the goal. The score came just 2:38 into the second half.
JMU had a number of other quality scoring chances, but Navy goalkeepers Hannah Legler (Cypress, Texas/Cy-Fair) and Alexes Lopez-Shaw (Bothell, Wash./Holy Names Academy), who each played a half, stymied the Dukes on several occasions.
Legler made a leaping save on JMU's first shot of the game, an attempt from 25 yards out in the second minute by sophomore Katie Menzie (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly). In the 11th minute she stopped a point-blank header by redshirt sophomore Kelly Germain (McLean, Va./Langley).
In the second period, just minutes after Miller had put the Dukes on the scoreboard, Lopez-Shaw faced Rynier in a one-on-one and made a save. She also made a leaping save on a lofted shot by Menzie in the 73rd minute.  Â
JMU out-shot Navy 20-10, but the Mids had several scoring opportunities. Freshman Paloma Perez (Bossier City, La./McGill-Toolen) took a shot that hit the cross bar in the 24th minute, and sophomore Fallon Puppolo (Sankt Leon, Germany/Heidelberg) sent a shot just wide of the goal in the 77th minute.
JMU redshirt senior goalkeeper Diane Wszalek (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) made three stops, all in the final 10 minutes, to preserve the shutout.Â
"It was good to get back in the win column. We really needed the shutout to boost our confidence; the last two games we gave up nine goals, and that was very uncharacteristic for us," head coach Dave Lombardo said. "We played pretty well today. We got a nice goal out of Haley Miller, and our defense was pretty stingy."
NOTES:
* Freshman Haley Miller's header off Teresa Rynier's cross was Miller's first career goal.
* Senior Teresa Rynier's school career record assist total now stands at 44. She set the record of 40 in the 2009 season.
* Redshirt senior Diane Wszalek recorded her 19th career solo shutout and her 25th career overall shutout. Â She's two away from the school career record of 21 solo shutouts and is now tied for third with Cheryl Carr (1991-94) on the total JMU career shutout list.
