HARRISONBURG, Va., Sept. 5, 2010 - Tara Jennings scored with 1:27 remaining in overtime to lift No. 10 Duke to a 1-0 win over No. 12 James Madison at the JMU Field Hockey Complex on Sunday.
The Dukes lost to a top-20 team for the second time in as many days to drop to 2-2 this season. Duke capped a 2-0 weekend to improve to 3-1 in 2010.
"I'm really encouraged about what's next for us," said head coach Antoinette Lucas. "As long as we can build and grow from today, I think we're going to be quite good."
The game-winner came on the third of three consecutive penalty corners for the Blue Devils. Chelsea Amsley inserted the ball to Stephanie Fee who set the ball up for a Jennings blast that snuck past redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Margo Savage (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne). It was the first goal this season for Jennings.
Savage made four stops for JMU on her way to dropping to 2-2 this season. The sophomore has limited opponents to 0.71 goals against through four starts in 2010.
Duke held a 14-10 advantage in shots, including a 6-0 difference in overtime. The Blue Devils four overtime penalty corners helped them to an 8-3 advantage in that category. JMU outshot Duke 7-1 in the second half.
Senior Dolores de Rooij (Vlaardingen, The Netherlands/Erasmiaans) led Madison with three shots, including two on goal. Sophomore Auburn Weisensale (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) chipped in with two shots.
JMU returns to the field next weekend during a three-day trip to Michigan. The Dukes will face Michigan on Friday night in Ann Arbor, before heading to Lansing, Mich. for a date with No. 7 Michigan State.
