BLACKSBURG, Va., Oct. 15, 2011 – The James Madison swimming and diving relay team of senior Catalina Mendieta (Parkland, Fla./Marjory Stoneman Douglas), junior Caroline Burns (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) and freshmen Sin Hye Won (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and Susanne Gingher (Boalsburg, Pa./State College Area) finished first in the 200-yard medley relay on Saturday, but JMU dropped a pair of decisions in a double-dual meet against Atlantic Coast Conference foes.
Virginia Tech picked up a 99-41 win over the Dukes and N.C. State downed Madison 91-49 to drop it to 4-2 overall. The Hokies swept Saturday's action to start its season at 2-0 while the Wolfpack got off to 1-1 start to their season.
The 200 medley relay team finished the race in 1:44.46 to earn JMU's only win of the meet.
A trio of freshman earned the Dukes' three second-place finishes as Won took second in the 100-yard breaststroke, Gingher was second in the 50 freestyle and Aimee Hooper (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) was the runner-up in the 500 free. Won was narrowly edged by Virginia Tech's Keri Sink in the 100 breast, finishing with a time of 1:04.84. Gingher touched the wall in 23.81 in the 50 free and Hooper posted a time of 5:00.20 in the 500 free.
Won also added a third-place finish in the 200 breast (2:22.73) while Hooper was the top JMU finisher in the 1,000 free (10:21.02). All three rookies were part of the 400 freestyle relay team, along with senior Eva Hannesdottir (Seltjarnarnes, Iceland/Kvennaskolinn), that finished third with a time of 3:34.38.
Sophomore Kelsey Holmgaard (Roanoke, Va./George Mason) turned in two third-place finishes (200 free, 200 individual medley) and a fourth (100 free) to help lead the Dukes on Saturday.
In diving, junior Kimberly Helfrich (Fort Belvoir, Va./West Springfield) finished fourth in both dives. She turned in a score of 259.10 on the one-meter board and a .276.45 on the three-meter board to earn points in each event. Senior Nicole Jotso (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) was fifth in the 1-meter with a 243.25.
JMU is back in action in two weeks as it travels to Morgantown, W.Va. for a dual meet against West Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 29.
