HARRISONBURG, Va., Aug. 26, 2011 -- The James Madison women's soccer team (1-1-1) turned in its highest-scoring game in a decade in a 6-0 win over Pittsburgh (0-2-1) in Friday night's opening round of the JMU/Fairfield Inn by Marriott Invitational Tournament.
In the day's first game, Delaware (1-1-0) shut out Stony Brook (1-1-0) 3-0.
Dukes' freshman Katie Hyland (Islip, N.Y./Islip) scored twice and sophomore Lauren Wilson (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown) tied a school record with four assists as JMU posted its first victory in three games this season.
Hyland's two goals came in a span of less than 10 minutes in a flurry that saw the Dukes score four times in the final 15 minutes of the second half.
After 30 scoreless minutes of play, JMU sophomore Haley Miller (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) scored off a header in the 31st minute. A long throw-in by sophomore Becky Sparks (Laurel Springs, N.J./Paul VI) was headed toward the far post by senior Yolie Anderson-Golhor (Ottawa, Ontario/Louis-Riel). Miller then redirected the ball to the left side of the goal.
Less than six minutes later, Wilson fed a pass ahead to Hyland, who rifled a shot from the edge of the 18-yard box into the left corner of the goal for a 2-0 JMU lead in the 37th minute.
In the 43rd minute, a shot by Wilson deflected off a Pitt defender, and senior Ariana Ruela (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) placed the rebound into the net.
Hyland finished off the first-half scoring, giving the Dukes a 4-0 lead with 17 seconds left in the opening period. Wilson started the play with a pass to Miller, who sent the ball ahead to Hyland, who scored from six yards out.
The play of the night, however, came 5:04 into the second half. Anderson-Golhor delivered a pass to sophomore Sam Lofton (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain), who was closely marked by several Pitt defenders. She deftly controlled the ball, weaved through the defenders and hit a left-footed shot from the edge of the 18-yard box into the upper right corner of the goal.
Redshirt freshman Sam Scalf (St. Johns, Fla./Bartram Trail) completed the scoring with a goal in the 70th minute. Wilson sent a pass from the right endline to Scalf, who was just feet away from the right corner of the goal, and Scalf knocked the ball inside the right post.
"It's been a struggle the last weekend with Virginia Tech (3-1 loss) and Villanova (1-1 tie), and I knew we had it in us. We were hoping for a break out game, and we came really ready to play," said JMU Head Coach Dave Lombardo. "
Delaware junior Melissa Pennington (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) scored twice and sophomore Shannon Kearney (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park) earned two assists in the Blue Hens' 3-0 win over Stony Brook earlier Friday. Senior goalkeeper Breanna Stemler (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) made six stops to get the shutout.
