HARRISONBURG, Va., August 16, 2012 – The James Madison field hockey team continues its preparation for the 2012 season as it hosted Appalachian State at the JMU Field Hockey Complex for a scrimmage on Thursday.
JMU won the scrimmage 8-0 before the teams concluded the day by practicing the new shootout procedures that will be implemented this season.
Six different players scored goals for the Dukes, including a hat trick from sophomore forward Bethany Ashworth (Lititz, Pa./Warwick). Also scoring for Madison were redshirt freshman forward Taylor West (Princess Anne, Md./Pocomoke) and redshirt junior forward Rachel Wein (Perryville, Md./Perryville) who had a goal and two assists each, while sophomore forward Taylor Bailey (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford), freshman forward Kristen Reitano (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) and sophomore forward Sarah Bieszczad (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) each scored once.
JMU outshot ASU 29-8 for the game, including a 19-2 advantage in the first half. The Dukes earned six penalty corners to three for the Mountaineers.
Madison hosts another scrimmage on Saturday as it takes on Penn State at noon. It opens its season Friday, August 24 with a neutral site game against Vermont in Kent, Ohio.
