Field Hockey Drops 3-2 Decision at Delaware

NEWARK, Del., Oct. 6, 2013 – Three unanswered goals in the final 12 minutes of play led to James Madison field hockey's 3-2 loss at Delaware on Sunday afternoon.
JMU dropped to 1-2 in Colonial Athletic Association games and 6-6 overall while Delaware improved to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in CAA play.
With a little more than 11 minutes remaining in the game, Delaware's Kasey Prettyman connected on a shot from the top of the circle to cut the JMU lead to 2-1. The goal came off the Blue Hens' 15th shot of the afternoon and their ninth shot on goal.
A score off a corner by Esmee Peet knotted the game at 2-all with 7:43 remaining in the game. At the 68:24 mark, Michaela Patzner gave the Blue Hens the 3-2 lead when she scored off a centering pass from Meghan Winesett.
Senior Stephanie Tarafas (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) took the loss (3-2) after allowing three goals from 10 shots on goal. Sarah Scher earned the win (8-3) after two goals against and three saves.
Delaware outshot JMU 18-6, including a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Blue Hens also earned eight corners to the Dukes' four earned corners.
The Dukes scored on their first shot of the day, a tap-in by sophomore Saskia Chelmowski (Berlin, Germany/Gustav-Heinemann Oberschule) from junior Taylor Bailey (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford). Chelmowski now has four goals on the season and nine points, and Bailey has 10 points off three goals and four assists this year.
Redshirt-sophomore Taylor West (Princess Anne, Md./Pocomoke) fired in a shot less than four minutes into the second half to double the Dukes' lead. It was her team-leading 11th goal of the season, and she now has 25 points.
JMU returns home Wednesday, Oct. 9, for a non-conference match against Radford. Play begins at 7 p.m. at the JMU Field Hockey Complex.
