KIAWAH ISLAND, South Carolina – The James Madison women's golf team was unable to make up ground and finished 16th at the 2014 Palmetto Intercollegiate, Oct. 26-28. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by College of Charleston, was played at Kiawah Island Resort's Turtle Point Course (Par 72 – 5,972 yards) in Kiawah Island, S.C.
JMU again could not get the scoring rolling and shot a 28-over 316 to finish at 73-over 937 in 16th. Coastal Carolina led from wire-to-wire for its second straight tournament win, finishing at 2-over 866, 12 shots ahead of runner-up No. 25 GRU Augusta at 14-over 878. No. 30 Furman finished third at 15-over 879 while South Florida jumped up three places in the final 18 to finish fourth at 27-over 891. No. 39 Kansas placed fifth at 33-over 897.
Senior Shabril Brewer (Herndon, Va./Westfield) was the top JMU finisher in a tie for 43rd at 14-over 230 following a final round 6-over 78. Freshman Gabrielle Weiss (Southern Pines, N.C./Pinecrest) tied for 60th at 18-over 234, as she had the low score of the day for Madison with a 5-over 77. Freshmen Laura Gomez-Ruiz (Malaga, Spain) tied for 68th at 20-over 236, while junior Rachel Walker (Waxhaw, N.C./Marvin Ridge) tied for 81st at 23-over 239. Senior Nikola Wessels (Muenster, Germany/Marienschule Muenster) was the final Madison player at 29-over 245, tying for 92nd.
Coastal Carolina's Lena Schaeffner was the individual medalist at 4-under 212 following a 1-under 71 in the final round. Schaeffner won by one shot over Kansas's Yupaporn Kawinpakom at 3-under 213.
The Dukes will return to the course in 2015, opening up the spring portion of their schedule at the 2015 Amelia Island Collegiate on Mon.-Tue., Feb. 23-24. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by Jacksonville University, will be played at Amelia National Golf Club in Amelia Island, Florida. Last season, JMU finished sixth at the tournament among the 14 teams.
