JMU Finishes 14th At JU Amelia Island as Rain Washes Out Final Round

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. – Rain washed out the final round of the JU Amelia Island Collegiate, giving the James Madison women's golf team with a 14th-place finish. Hosted by Jacksonville University, the shortened one-day, 36-hole event was played at Amelia National Golf Club (Par 72 – 6,029 yards) in Fernandina Beach, Florida, outside of Jacksonville.
On Monday, the Dukes shot a 29-over 317 in the morning round and improved two shots in the afternoon for a 27-over 315 and two-round score of 56-over 632 for the tournament. Florida International took home the team title with a 4-over 580, three shots ahead of North Florida at 7-over 583. Daytona State was third at 8-over 584 with Stetson in fourth at 17-over 593. Toledo completed the top five out of 15 teams at 29-over 605.
Freshman Laura Gomez-Ruiz led the JMU effort, as she tied for 12th at 3-over 147. It was her top finish of the season and third top-25 finish overall. Senior Shabril Brewer was the second finisher for the Dukes, as she finished in a tie for 58th at 16-over 160. Freshman Gabrielle Weiss finished one shot back of Brewer at 17-over 161 in a tie for 62nd. Junior Kelsey Solan tied for 72nd at 23-over 167 while junior Rachel Walker was the final JMU team finisher at 24-over 168, tied for 74th. Playing as an individual, senior Nikola Wessels placed 78th at 30-over 174.
FIU's Meghan McLaren was the individual medalist at 11-under 133, including a stellar 8-under 64 in the opening round. She won by eight shots over runner-up Tiffany Chan of Daytona State College. The two are the only players under par in the tournament.
JMU returns to the course Mon.-Tue., March 9-10 at the North Florida Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole tournament will be played at Jacksonville Golf & Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla.
