Gomez-Ruiz Posts Top-25 Finish as JMU Places 14th at UNF Collegiate

JACKSONVILLE, Florida – The James Madison women's golf team could not make up any more ground and finished 14th at the 2015 UNF Collegiate, March 9-10. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the University of North Florida, was played at Jacksonville Golf and Country Club (Par 72 – 6,050 yards) in Jacksonville, Fla.
JMU shot a final round 28-over 316 to finish at 89-over 953 for the three-round event. Houston ran away with the team title in the final round, shooting a tournament-best 3-over 291 and finish at 21-over 885, 15 shots better than the runner-up, No. 50 Texas at 36-over 900. Colonial Athletic Association-rival Delaware was fourth at 43-over 907, with Samford in fifth at 52-over 916. Host UNF completed the top-five teams in the 18-team field, finishing at 56-over 920.
Freshman Laura Gomez-Ruiz was the top finisher for JMU, placing 23rd at 14-over 230 following a final-round 4-over 76. Senior Shabril Brewerwas next after a 5-over 77 in the last 18 put her at 24-over 240, tied for 59th. Junior Kelsey Solan tied for 63rd one shot back of Brewer at 25-over 241, with freshman Gabrielle Weiss tied for 68th at 27-over 243. Junior Rachel Walker was the final player on the squad, tying for 78th at 31-over 247. Playing as an individual, senior Nikola Wesselsshot a personal tournament-low 9-over 81 in the last round to finish 100th at 48-over 264.
Houston's Megan Thothong shot a 4-under 68 in the final round to move up eight spots and take home medalist honors at 1-over 217. She finished one shot ahead of Bertine Strauss of Texas and fellow Cougar Emily Gilbreth at 2-over 218.
The Dukes return to the course Monday-Tuesday, March 30-31 for the Web.com Intercollegiate. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by Jacksonville University, will be played at Marsh Landing Country Club in Jacksonville, Florida.
