Dukes Suffer 1-0 Loss at No. 18 Northeastern

DEDHAM, Mass. – The James Madison field hockey team (10-7, 2-3 CAA) suffered a 1-0 loss at No. 18 Northeastern (13-4, 4-1 CAA) on Friday, Oct. 31, at Dedham Field in Dedham, Massachusetts. Today marked the Dukes' 13th game decided by one goal (7-6) this season.
The Huskies scored the lone goal of the game off a penalty corner awarded as time expired in the first half. Caroline Judge fired in the game-winning shot with zeroes on the clock off assists from Natalie Stewart and Emma Lamison.
Northeastern was awarded six penalty corners while JMU had two, both in the second half of play and was just the fourth time in 2014 an opponent has earned more corners than the Dukes (Old Dominion, William and Mary, Duke).
JMU edged Northeastern in shots 9-8, including a 7-3 edged in the second half. Both teams posted five shots on goal in the game. Redshirt-junior midfielder Taylor West (Princess Anne, Md./Pocomoke) had a game-high four shots with two on goal. Junior forward Erin Gallivan (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) also posted two shots on goal.
Becky Garner earned the win (13-4) after making four saves to preserve her shut out. Senior Hannah George (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) tallied the loss after making three saves and allowing one goal. Junior midfielder Saskia Chelmowski (Berlin, Germany/Gustav-Heinemann Oberschule) made her first defensive save of the season in the game, preventing a Northeastern goal in the first half.
Northeastern secured a berth in the 2014 Colonial Athletic Association Championship Tournament, hosted Nov. 7 and 9 by the highest seed. JMU has one more chance to secure a trip to the tournament as the Dukes travel to Hofstra on Sunday, Nov. 2, for their regular-season finale.
Because the Pride lost to William and Mary on Friday night, both squads could finish the conference slate tied with 3-3 records if JMU defeats Hofstra. If the Dukes win, JMU holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over Hofstra and would earn the No. 4 seed in the tournament.
JMU and Hofstra face off at noon on Sunday, Nov. 2, in their crucial regular-season finale at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium in Hempstead, New York.
